Cockliffe Country House
Burntstump Country Park, Nottinghamshire

OVERVIEW

Cockliffe Country House is a beautiful historic venue in the North of Nottinghamshire that dates back to the 17th Century. Built and completed in 1678 as a rural hunting lodge, this enchanting house has seen some famous visitors in its time, including King Edward VIII and Sir Winston Churchill. Cockliffe has had many reported hauntings, from a ghostly little girl who frightens the kitchen and bar staff, to the spirit of a White Lady, whose life story is a mystery so far. Cockliffe Country House is EXCLUSIVE to Brookes Paranormal.

HISTORY

The history of the property dates back to 1678, where two cottages and a granary were built on this site. One of these cottages was extended in 1725, to create a farm producing Woodcocks for the wealthy local shoots in and around the woods, which is where the name Cockliffe House comes from.

Before this building, the land during late Saxon times up to the end of the Medieval period would've been used as farms, with the woods being a part of the larger Sherwood Forest, one of the best royal hunting forests in the country at that time.

Fast forward to the beginning of the 1900s, the Seeley family bought the cottages and farm to further establish their sprawling estate, and their decision to purchase the property and land was influenced by the fact they owned Sherwood Manor, which was located in close proximity. It was transformed into an upper class hunting lodge for their visiting guests, and some of their most notable visitors who stayed at Cockliffe included King Edward VIII during the 1930s, and Sir Winston Churchill during the 1940s. Many parties and occasions were celebrated at Cockliffe House during those years, as the Seeleys gained a reputation for being incredibly generous and hedonistic hosts. Sadly though it seemed the party was over, as in 1948, the Seeley Estate liquidated and the house became a private home, before becoming a public Heritage Centre in its later years.

In the early 1990s, Cockliffe House became a commercial property again, before being purchased by a married couple in 1995, who converted the premises into a restaurant with rooms available for accommodation.

The building remained in this condition until about 2013 when business had near enough collapsed, with less and less visitors and diners appearing. In 2014, the property was bought for £1 million by Heritage Estates, who transformed the House into a luxury wedding and seasonal events venue, without removing the historic decor that gives life and character to the location.

In 2022, Brookes Paranormal were happy to announce that we would be hosting exclusive ghost hunting nights at the location, including the very first paranormal investigation in the building's history in April that same year, and we've been coming back ever since.

GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS

Cockliffe Country House is a very haunted location, with a few known ghosts who are seen by staff in the day time.

There are two spiritual apparitions who are seen inside the House and outside on the grounds by members of staff during the day. One of these is a ghost of a Little Girl who is seen regularly by the head chef. He has been so terrified of this spirit, that he wears a cross around his neck for protection, not knowing nor understanding who this little girl is. The second ghost is of a White Lady. Staff have gone upstairs to the bedrooms, looked out the window and have seen this female spirit dressed in glowing white walking calmly across the gardens. Again no one knows who she is and why she haunts here.

On past investigations we have picked up on both spirits, with the Little Girl being seen as a small shadow darting past the Dining Room towards the kitchen area. In the upstairs bedrooms, we have had the name White Lady come up on ALICE ITC, and guests have felt sick and nauseated when talking about this female energy.

Dark Shadows are seen outside between the buildings, and strange taps are heard inside the House in response to asking questions. Interaction with equipment is also common when calling out to spirit.

One strange occurrence that staff can't explain, is an incident that happened in December 2021, when a chandelier in the breakfast bar was discovered smashed and broken on the floor one morning. The chandelier is hooked to the ceiling, and so the only way the chandelier could fall and smash like that is if someone unhooked it and dropped it Staff checked their CCTV cameras later that afternoon, and watched as the chandelier became unhooked by unseen hands. You can still see today where the missing chandelier is from this incident.

Another strange happening takes place in one particular bedroom, Room 2. Unbeknown to anyone, this room seems to attract flies, with flies still getting into the room despite all the windows being shut. No one knows why this happens, but we believe this could have something to do with the White Lady.

In another bedroom, Room 4 which we call the Red Room, has multiple mirrors facing each other, essentially acting like a portal highway for spirits to manifest themselves into our atmosphere, and it's also in this room that guests become ill and gain headaches.

And lastly in the Groundskeeper Cottage, the spirit of a gentleman makes his presence known, by interacting with equipment, tapping on the doors and table, and touching people on their heads and shoulders. Is this a former worker for the Seeley Estate, or does this man go further back in time to when this land were farms?
