Strelley Village
Strelley, Nottinghamshire

OVERVIEW

Strelley is a small rural village outside the city of Nottingham, with accounts of deaths, ghostly tales and incredible history. Home of the famous de Strelley family, this bucolic village is rich in spooky history dating back to Anglo Saxon and Norman times. From a lost Saxon Village that became Strelley Castle and later Strelley Hall estate, to stories of Ghostly Monks and the legendary Knights of Strelley.

HISTORY

Strelley originated back to Saxon times, where this village was a landscape of farms and manors. Shortly after the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror granted his loyal friend and knight William Peveril the manors and lands of Strelley. During the reign of Henry I, Strelley was handed over to a Norman knight called Walter, who took on the surname 'de Strelley'.

Following Walter were 12 generations of de Strelleys, all of whom were knights, including Sir Robert de Strelley, Sir John de Strelley, and the infamous Sir Sampson de Strelley who survived the Black Death and paid to restore and rebuild Strelley Church.

Since that time, there has been a Medieval Castle built and reconstructed into a Hall, wealthy families that have come and gone, coal mines opened and later closed, the construction and closure of the first overland wagonway, a farmhouse converted into the village pub, the expansion of the village, new discoveries of the land's past and more.

Want to learn more of Strelley Village's history? Book on our next Ghost Walk here and experience the historical journey back in time.

GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS

Strelley is known for being a haunted, pastoral village, with a variety of ghost stories and spiritual beings that'll raise the hairs on your neck.

Over fifteen ghosts are believed to haunt Strelley Village, from a former pub landlord and the Saxon ghost of the moat, to the spectres of knights on horseback and religious monks. You'll be given opportunities to take photos at key haunted sites, where in past pictures of white mists, light anomalies and shadow figures have been captured, or better still, seen with our own eyes. Our mini investigation vigils allow for us to call out and use ghost hunting equipment, and see if any ghostly energies and paranormal activity can be experienced.

The story of Strelley is truly a captivating one, and with several accounts of ghost sightings, paranormal experiences and compelling legends passed down through the centuries, our exciting and spooky Ghost Walks at Strelley Village are not to be missed.
