Your night of ghost hunting with Brookes Paranormal is guaranteed to be a fun, safe and spooky one. Experience this historic location with exclusive access after dark, as you explore the eerie rooms and areas in search for the ghostly spirits that haunt here.

 

Here at the Newarke Houses Museum, you will get to investigate areas like the 1950s Cobbled Street, the 1645 Panelled Room, World War Exhibits, WW1 Trench and the Chantry House where paranormal activity has been experienced.

 

Our team are friendly, professional, approachable and knowledgeable with paranormal investigating, and we will guide and support you to make sure you get the most out of your investigation. Whether you're a paranormal novice or an experienced investigator, you'll be well-looked after and treated like family. This is an honest ghost hunting experience, so there won't be any fakery or trickery during the night. We believe that if activity happens, it happens for real.

 

On your ghost hunt, you will be split into smaller groups to give you the best, personal experience possible. You will also get hands on with various pieces of ghost hunting equipment, such as EMF Meters, REM Pods, Spirit Boxes and Detectors, and participate in interesting paranormal experiments such as Victorian Table Tipping, Ouija Boards and the Estes Method.

 

You will also have a couple of breaks throughout the night, where we provide you with unlimited refreshments and snacks to re-energise ready for the next vigil.

The Chantry House was built in 1511, while the Skeffington House was built between 1560 and 1580. The two Houses were owned by William Wygston and Thomas Skeffington respectively, and make up the Newarke Houses Museum today, located in what is now the heart of De Montfort University.

 

The owner of the Chantry House, William Wygston, was a wealthy wool merchant and town benefactor for Leicester. He built the Chantry House as a home for two priests, who gave prayers, blessings and mass for William Wygston and his family. Strangely, there is a gravestone slab placed into one of the walls of the Chantry House, written in Latin and dates back to the 1300s, despite the House being built in the early 16th Century. Does the house hide a secret in its history waiting to be revealed? In the 17th Century, the Chantry House became a grand domestic residence.

 

The Skeffington House has a different story. Built and owned by Thomas Skeffington, who at the time was Sheriff of Leicester, this House was constructed with the width of just one room. Extensions to the property weren't made until the 1790s by William Oldham.
 

Since opening as a Museum in 1953, the Newarke Houses has been home to various artefacts and collections, from the Tudor times to the last 50 years. Towards the rear end of the location, there is a recreation of a typical 1950s cobbled street. Upstairs is also a recreation of a World War 1 trench, with exhibitions about the Wars. The 'Toys and Games' exhibition is located in the oldest part of the location, featuring Tudor toys. Downstairs is a small room which displays some of the clothing worn by Daniel Lambert, a Leicester Gaol Keeper who was famous for his size and weight, as well as his favourite wide chair to sit on. By the time his Gaol closed in 1805, Daniel weighed a whopping 50 stone, making him the heaviest authenticated person on record at that time. At the front of the building, there are panelled rooms with an original fireplace and coat of arms.

With centuries of local history and scarred by the bloody 1645 Siege of Leicester, the ancient timber and stone of Newarke Houses Museum carry a heavy, lingering energy beyond its rich heritage.

 

The ghost of a priest has been seen in the Chantry House, kneeling and praying in the corner of the downstairs room, terrifying staff and investigators with his sudden appearance. Could this be one of Wygston's priests who lived here, and if so will we find out who he is?

 

Visual sightings of a dark, cloaked figure has been seen walking up and down the grand oak staircase, accompanied by the sounds of footsteps roaming the upper floors, despite them being empty.

 

In the WW1 Trench, light anomalies and auditory phenomena have been reported, along with the sensation of people's clothing being tugged by unseen hands.

 

In the 1645 Panelled Room, eerie apparitions of former residents have been witnessed and sensed walking through parts of the panelling, with strange disembodied voices, cold spots and heavy footsteps detected.

 

In the 1950s Cobbled Street, shadow figures have been experienced numerous times, and both a Victorian gentleman and a lady have manifested and been picked up on by mediums. Who are these two characters and will we learn more about their stories?

 

And located in the garden is a stone wall, fractured by history from cannon and musket fire during the bloody Siege of Leicester in 1645 during the English Civil War. In the dead of night, ghostly cavaliers dressed in military attire wander the grounds, leaving late-night ghost hunters scared of their harrowing presence.
